FAQ’s

Emirates Digital Wallet will be an own-brand digital app to be offered by any member bank to their customers (who can be consumers or small business) to access and use. Some non-member banks will also be offering it to customers. The app will also be available direct from Emirates Digital Wallet by anyone who is resident in the UAE.
Once they have set up the app customers will also be able to link their Digital Wallet to their credit/covered/debit cards from all issuers if they have them and use them at any outlet, anywhere in the UAE. They can move funds from any UAE bank(s) or deposit cash into their Digital Wallet at designated Cash Deposit Machines. Using their Digital Wallet they can pay for goods or services, send and receive money, and store money for when they need it. They do not need to have a bank account. They can also obtain cash from ATMs by accessing funds stored on their Digital Wallet.
The Emirates Mobile Wallet Company is jointly owned by 16 of the leading UAE national banks. This is what makes the Emirates Digital Wallet so unique. It will be regulated by the UAE Central Bank and operated in partnership with Mastercard. Member banks are NBAD, ADCB, ADIB, Mashreq Bank, DIB, CBD, RAK Bank, UNB, Al Hilal Bank, SIB, Al Masraf, Bank of Sharjah, Invest Bank, UAB, NBF, and NBQ. The Digital Wallet Company has a Board of 9 representatives of stakeholder banks, and its Chairman is Mohammed Al Jayyash, Chief Service Officer of Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. The General Manager of Emirates Digital Wallet is Maki Vekinis, previously Head of Global Transaction Services at Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank.
There are three principal aims:
  • The first is as an effective payments system forming the financial component of the smart government initiative announced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE in 2014
  • The second is to support the government’s desire for better financial inclusion, primarily among the 1.3 million unbanked, in the UAE economy
  • And the third is to support the UAE banks’ (and Central Bank’s) desire to reduce and ultimately remove cash in circulation in the UAE economy so as to make it more efficient and to minimise fraud and the risks inherent in the use of cash
Creating a highly efficient, safe and popular system for payment and remittance of money. But a high priority for the project is also improving financial inclusion of the unbanked segment of the UAE population – over 1.3 million UAE residents. It will enable them to access basic financial services, such as receiving funds or making payments. It will also help reduce cash in circulation, thus reducing costs and fraud while increasing security and financial stability. It will add value to a potential base of 3 million customers using it to pay in a wide variety of scenarios, providing services in addition to payments. Working together banks can create a modern and efficient digital wallet for the entire population that reduces the use of cash and benefits all parties in the ecosystem while cementing the customer relationship through the cornerstone of easy payment provision.
They will be offered it by their banks under the bank’s own branding if they are members of the Emirates Digital Wallet. If they are not, banks can offer it to their customers as an additional option. Customers without bank accounts will also be able to apply directly to Emirates Digital Wallet to sign up.
It will be very safe. The entire payment process is protected by a state of the art firewall which is of the same status and calibre that protects customers’ assets and transactions with UAE banks. It will also be regulated by the UAE Central Bank.
